Friends in a small town on the fringe of a major metropolitan area are wrestling through a shockingly extended period of racist hostility and death threats against their son at his junior high school.

The specifically racist tone of the threats is outrageous and soul-shattering. That said, there are immediate physical safety issues that can and must be addressed while the community sorts out longer term questions about the common good.

Lethal violence related to school populations is rarer than many people think, and the research is so thorough and conclusive that I want to set out two things we know beyond a shadow of doubt:

1. Not every student or former student who threatens violence follows through on the threat 
2. Since 1974 in the US, every student or former student who committed lethal violence against his school population, threatened to do so beforehand

In every case of lethal school violence, someone knew a boy or young man intended to cause harm, but didn't believe it,
or failed to take it seriously,
or let personal loyalty overshadow wisdom and goodness,
or couldn't imagine what ended up happening, even after the perpetrator painted a picture.

Following deadly school violence in Ohio, I summarized what we know about all this. The observations were made with parents and youth workers in mind, so there's more to be said at the institutional and community level. But—for everyone, at every level—the message couldn't be clearer: Schoolboys threaten violence before they act out at school... so take them seriously.

US Active Shooter Incidents 2000-13 | a new study

The FBI has concluded a study of the 160 active shooter incidents in the US from 2000 - 2013. An active shooter incident is a situation in which a person (or, rarely, persons) actively engages in killing or attempting to kill people in populated locations like businesses, schools, government facilities, houses of worship, and open spaces.*

Among the principle findings:

• Active shooter incidents increased in frequency. There were on average 6.4 incidents per year in 2000 - 2006, rising to an average of 16.4 incidents in 2007 - 2013.
• There were 1,043 casualties (486 killed, 557 wounded—excluding the shooters).
• Six of the 160 incidents involved a female shooter.
• 158 of 160 incidents involved just one shooter.
• 64 incidents fall within the federal definition of mass killing—three or more killed in a single incident
• 107 incidents ended before police arrived
• 90 shootings ended on the shooter’s initiative by suicide or flight. 
• 21 incidents ended after unarmed citizens restrained the shooter.
• Four incidents were interrupted by armed security guards or off-duty law officers. 
• One incident was ended by a citizen with a valid firearm carry permit.
• In the 64 incidents where duration could be determined, 44 ended in five minutes or less, 23 of those in two minutes or less.
• In 21 of the 45 incidents where law enforcement engaged the shooter, nine officers were killed and 28 were wounded.
• Active shooter incidents occurred in seven environments
• 73 incidents occurred in commercial environments
• 39 took place in educational environments
• 16 were in government facilities
• 15 were in open spaces
• seven in residences
• six in houses of worship
• four in health care facilities.

* Active shooter incidents are distinguished from "ordinary" murders by the active and public nature of the crime

“Christian Führer, 71, East German Pastor Whose Prayer Meetings Inspired Protests” was the headline for a July 3, New York Times obituary. In 1983, when the Iron Curtain and the Berlin Wall still symbolized the reality of non-freedom, including for Christians, I visited Johann Sebastian Bach’s native city of Leipzig in the then German Democratic Republic also known as East Germany. While there, I was invited to the home of a professor’s wife and daughter. In that drab and dingy world, the hostess opened her door and pointed: “Komm herein! This is this year’s flowers and wine on the table, and you are this year’s guests.” Her apartment was debugged, so she could speak freely, as did her daughter who had to choose between being a confirmand or getting into a university. Meanwhile, in the same East German city, a young pastor (born 1943, ordained 1968) was praying his way to becoming a leader. His last name, Führer, means “leader” in German—his mission changed the world. The story is well remembered, though the pastor’s name did not become a household word in our part of the world. Impelled, he made clear, by Jesus and the gospel of peace, and inspired by other leaders with names like Bonhoeffer, King, and Gandhi, he believed in, preached, and practiced the way of peace. Führer worked with young people who were hungry for freedom and who would pray and march their way toward its realization. During 1987-88 he and his colleagues organized peace marches at and from Leipzig’s St. Nicholas Church. The movement grew from a few participants to 320,000 pray-ers willing to brave the clubs of police officers though the officers were powerless to stop the marches. Some, it was said, practiced self-restraint in admiration for the courageous young folk. Führer, clad in jeans and leather, did not look like a pastor in the official, but scrutinized and suspect Lutheran church. Still, his “forces” are usually credited with having the most significant role in bringing down the Communist regime in East Germany and in contributing to the fall of the Wall. The pastor, true to his calling, insisted on non-violence and convinced his followers to be utterly peaceful. “We were ready for anything but candles and prayer,” the police acknowledged. Führer stuck to his message. “What I saw [at the biggest demonstration] still gives me shivers,” he said years later. “And if anything deserves the word ‘miracle’ at all, then this was a miracle of Biblical proportions. We succeeded in bringing about a revolution, which achieved Germany’s unity... It was a peaceful revolution after so much violence and so many wars that we, the Germans, so often started.”
